I recently deleted Windows 95 and installed Windows 98. When I deleted Windows 95, I forgot to delete the C:\Windows folder, so when installing Windows 98 it created a folder called C:\Windows.000. I cannot rename this back to C:\Windows. Is there a way?
If you install Windows on to a system that already contains an apparently invalid Windows folder (in this case because you had deleted most of the files), setup will create a default name for the install location by appending a number (such as .000) to the folder name.
What you should have done, when prompted with the install location, was click 'Other Directory' and select your existing Windows folder. Unfortunately, although there are ways to rename the folder, it will do you no good.
The name 'Windows.000' will be in hundreds of Registry entries and other configuration files. Changing the folder name will prevent Windows from running, so you'll have to live with it or reinstall, we're afraid.
